On Wednesday 19th October 2016, Maktaba Welfare Association held a send off event for five (5) Library staff who recently retired. Maktaba is a welfare association for the Librarians at the University of Nairobi.

The five members of staff are: Mrs. Were who retired as Deputy Director (Technical Services), Mr.Liyai, Deputy Director (Administration), Dr. King’ori, Librarian (Acquisition), Mrs. Doreen Anyona, Senior Librarian (Africana Section) and Joyce Olang’o (Cleaner).

The retired staff shared their experience, encouragement and advice with the library staff. They emphasized that it is in work place where staff spend most of their time and therefore, healthy relationship should be nurtured. Each member of staff plays a role in ensuring the department and the institution as a whole functions efficiently. In regard to this, every staff should be respected for whatever input they give as they perform their duties.

The staff still in service were reminded that retirement takes the shape of what one has been doing while still in service. The library professionals were also advised to build bridges with colleagues from other disciplines and to be well grounded in the profession. Keeping abreast with trends in the profession was cited as important.
